Oscars
So I'm watching the Oscars, and I want to be the first one to say
FUCK THE LORD OF THE RINGS!
That's all, I'll comment on them later...

Alas, poor Micah. I hate to tell you this my friend but movies don't sweep the oscars like that and tie for most oscars ever, out of pity. If nothing else they did deserve all the technical awards, they did a lot of groudbreaking work. If you want to say they shouldn't have gotten best director, screen play, picture and song, what the hell does it matter. The movie that actually wins that shit seldom makes sense anyway. Part of the reason it won so many was becuase it just didn't have heavy cometition this year. Master and Commander was a similar type of move but it wasn't as good. Seabiscut...its about a HORSE dude. Lost in Translation is good but movies like that are always at a disadvantage. Like City of God EVER would have won best director...You wanna talk bullcrap, Finding Nemo beating Triplets of Belleville. The thing is, it is just bigger, that is why it won. And that is why LOTR won too. That and it RULES!!! AHAHAHHAAHAH!!!!
Try enjoying something for a change, you old curmudgeon. I hat you. Love, Nancy.
I can only hope you do not sincerely believe what you wrote about LOTR. Of course, I am a diehard LOTR fan, but it seems near to the point of ignorance to deny the filmmaking achievement that was LOTR. These films changed the way movies will be made, especially sequels, and they also opened the door to many new possibilities in film. A film that accomplishes all that is indeed a truly great film. Did LOTR deserve all 11 of its Oscars? If Ben-Hur and Titanic were worthy of such accolades than surely LOTR was as well. No other trio of films has received such universal praise from audiences, critics, and those that work within the industry-- including the mighty Godfather series. It is very easy to want to rebel against that which is popular or nearly universally accepted as excellent but sometimes one must get beyond the hype and look at the films as films and acknowledge the fact that they were just that darn good. Having seen 4 of the 5 films up for best picture (except for Seabiscuit), The Return of the King was simply head and shoulders above the rest. Master and Commander was very excellent, and in another year it may have won, but it was just not as good as LOTR -- although Russell Crowe may have been shafted out of a nomination (despite what you think of Russell Crowe, I think he is truly a great actor, temper tantrums and anti-hollywoodism aside-- but oh well, to each their own). Lost in Translation was a very smart, moving film, but it was not the landmark film achievement LOTR was. Finally, Mystic River was just plain overrated. It had some good performances, but on the whole I felt it was boring, Oscar-bait drabness.
In short, my beef is not so much with your disdain for the academy's decision so much as it is with the fact that you seem reluctant or opposed to acknowledging that LOTR will become a classic, and that people will be talking about it 50 years from now the way people talk about The Godfather, Citizen Kane, or Ben-Hur today.
LOTR is one of, if not the greatest filmmaking achievement of all time. This sounds like a gigantic claim, but let us remember that something that is popular without substance is doomed to be thrown by the wayside. Perhaps we should talk in thirty years to see who was correct.
